Winds of Change

Why did we spend considerable time and money to go in this direction? Mainly because first and foremost, we are both very passionate motorcycle enthusiasts and riders with more than 70 combined years experience in the two wheeled scene. This is exactly why we created VMOL – to "build a bridge for vintage motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.” Clearly, the Internet has also been a tremendous tool for us in building this bridge. To date, we have VMOL members and vintage bike enthusiasts from Europe, the UK, all over NE Asia and even South Africa! I have personally ridden several times with the famous “469 Vintage Club” of Taipei, Taiwan.

Our VMOL articles and photos are now a regular feature in “Master Link” – the vintage motorcycle club of South Africa. We have a presence now on Facebook and are regular contributors to that site. We have also published our first 2011 VMOL vintage motorcycle calendar, available now, by the way on our site) and the publisher was so happy with the results so far, that they asked us to start working on one for 2012. We do vintage content for Speed-TV and are now both featured monthly on www.sidestandup.com, the worlds only traveling motorcycle road show.

How cool is all that?

But the bottom-line is all this effort has a “time and money” cost factor, so this is one of the reasons we went to a “Pay-for-Subscription” service at VMOL. In order for Nolan and I to continue to improve our content for the future, and make VMOL the #1 vintage motorcycle website in the world, we need to be funded.

So in closing, take a look at what we are offering you for only $1.66 per month ($19.95 per year through Pay Pal). We believe this is an exceptional value; not from some “faceless corporation”, but from two passionate, vintage motorcycle enthusiasts and riders who really believe in, and thoroughly enjoy what they are doing.  We sincerely appreciate everyone who has given us positive feedback and have contributed to VMOL for the past two-years, and look forward to the future and making VMOL even bigger and better than ever! There are few things John and I are more passionate about than vintage motorcycles. That, and you, our valued readership. Whether we're riding, wrenching or snapping photographs, what we discover and cover is presented here for your enjoyment, edification or ridicule; all gladly accepted. As a virtual candy store of classic motorbikes, VMOL's mission is to share as much of the history and color of the vintage treasures we can stuff on your monitor.

When I began my journalism career, nearly six years passed until I received my first payment. The idea was to establish myself and see if the market liked what I had to offer. That exact same principle has been applied here and now, over two years in and averaging nearly 8000 hits per week, you have spoken. VMOL is a hit, but we're just getting started. Our response to that response? To make VMOL bigger, better, more colorful and with more inclusive features.

That of course means we're changing direction, and VMOL now has a paid membership area where these items can be viewed. Not a decision we took lightly, John and I mulled over the options available for generating income into the site and settled on two plausible solutions; 1) advertising or 2) pay to view. We choose the latter because with more people taking smaller bites (as John explained, less than two-dollars a month) with paid membership we have the potential for greater revenue with the added benefit of a cleaner, less cluttered website. We fully realize we're competing with thousands of free sites, but we're up for the challenge.

There's still plenty of free stuff, including our bi-monthly editorial, Bike of the Month, sample articles and photography plus the ever-popular VMOL forum. Members have access to the full wallpaper gallery, VMOL's exclusive feature articles, a new and vastly improved classifieds, our personal contact information and much more. Speaking of the feature stories, we've been hard at work and are confident that it's some of best vintage motorcycle content on the web.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many friends and readers who over the past two years have offered their encouragement and extended support. Flattery aside, John and I know VMOL's draw isn't us, but the subject matter, presentation and excellence displayed here. We consider it a privilege to host what we believe is the internet's best, most complete vintage motorcycle website. As our continued goal is to constantly and consistently improve, we're anxious to hear your feedback and suggestions. Until then, see you on the other side...Nolan Woodbury
